What South of Broad is built from
The tip of the peninsula below Broad Street, running down Church, Meeting and Legare to the Battery and the harbour. Georgian, Federal and Greek Revival building from the 1740s onward, and above all the Charleston single house: one room wide, turned end-on to the lot, with a two- or three-storey piazza down the south or west flank and a door on the street that opens onto that piazza rather than into the house. Walled gardens behind, service buildings on the lanes, and original board floors in most of the main rooms.
Houses that have changed hands only a handful of times, a good deal of furniture that arrived with the house, and a high proportion of rugs older than the people standing on them. Also the most photographed streets in the city, which means a steady flow of people past every front gate.
The South of Broad problem
The piazza is the mechanism, and it is the thing that makes rug wear here unlike anywhere else. You enter a single house through a garden door, up onto a covered outdoor floor, and only then into a room — so every household walks the length of a semi-exterior space before it reaches an interior one. A piazza is swept rather than cleaned, its open side is unglazed, and it collects street dust, mortar grit off the garden wall and whatever a squall drives along it. All of that is delivered at boot level to the first rug inside the door. The second half of it is the door itself. A piazza door swings inward across that same rug dozens of times a day, and a rug under a swinging door does not wear over an area, it wears on a line: the selvedge goes first, then the end weft, and the rug begins letting go from the edge inward while the field is still perfect. Owners read that as a worn rug. It is a mechanically damaged one, and it is a repair before it is a wash.
