What Mount Pleasant is built from
East of the Cooper over the Ravenel bridge, and the largest town in the county after Charleston itself. The Old Village on the harbour holds the nineteenth-century stock; everything from Snee Farm out to Park West and Carolina Park was built from the 1970s onward, on slab and on raised foundations, in family-sized houses on ordinary suburban lots.
The least seasonal population on the route — year-round households, largely with children, in houses that are lived in every day of the year. These are rugs bought for a specific room in a specific house rather than inherited into it.
The Mount Pleasant problem
The furnishing habit here is the problem, and it is a fibre problem rather than a climate one. Coastal decorating in Mount Pleasant means natural fibre by default: jute, sisal and seagrass under the dining table, in the hall, in the sunroom. Those are cellulose, not wool, and cellulose browns from its own water. A spill, a wet dog, a mopped floor edge — lignin migrates with the moisture to wherever the fibre dries last and leaves a brown halo darker than whatever caused it, permanently. The usual response is a wet cloth, which simply makes the halo twice the size. Jute also takes up odour readily and cannot be flushed the way wool can, so it gets a low-moisture method or it gets nothing. Running underneath all of that is plain use: a house that is occupied every day never gives a rug a quiet month, so nothing is rotated and nothing is lifted, and the lane between the kitchen and the back door wears through while three quarters of the same rug is untouched.
