What I’On is built from
A new-urbanist village inside Mount Pleasant, laid out from 1995 and built to Lowcountry precedent: narrow lots, deep front porches, houses set close to the street, service alleys and lanes behind, and two freshwater ponds in the middle of it. New buildings in an old idiom, on slab and on raised foundations both.
Households who chose a walking neighborhood deliberately, and who furnish these houses to match the architecture — which puts a great deal of antique and antique-style hand-knotted wool into buildings that are under thirty years old.
The I’On problem
The village works exactly as designed, and that is what puts soil into these rugs. Everybody walks — to the pond, to the square, to a neighbour’s, with a dog, several times a day. Most of these houses have the garage off the lane at the back, so the door people actually use is the front one, and the sequence is street, porch, main room, with no mudroom anywhere in it. What comes in is fine paving grit and pond-bank soil, and it is delivered by the front door rather than the back, which means it lands on the best rug in the house instead of on a runner. The second thing is the vacuum. This is a house-proud neighborhood and these rugs get vacuumed often, usually with a modern upright, and a rotating beater bar run weekly over a hand-knotted rug does more damage over a decade than the soil it is lifting: it fuzzes the pile, it grinds the side cords, and it chews fringe into the brush roll a few warps at a time. Turn the brush off, or use suction only, and take the fringe on a low setting by hand.
